Massage packages: how to build, price and sell session packs

The short answer

A good massage package has few sessions (4 to 10), a small honest discount, an expiry that matches the rhythm you recommend and clear rules on which services and therapists it covers. Sell it online, show the rules before payment, and let the pack itself be the gift: the client buys it and hands it over.

A massage package works when it is simple: few sessions (4 to 10), a small honest discount on the single price, an expiry that matches the rhythm you recommend and clear rules on services and therapists. Sell it online, show the rules before payment, and let clients buy a pack to give as a gift.

Why sell massage packages?

A package solves three problems for a massage studio at once:

  • Predictability. You are paid up front and know that client will come back a few times.
  • Rebooking. Someone who has already paid for the next session books the next session. “When will we see you again?” gets easier.
  • A bigger sale. You sell four, eight or ten massages instead of one.

For the client, a package is a commitment to themselves and a saving. For it to work on both sides, the discount cannot eat your margin and the rules cannot surprise anyone.

How many sessions should a package have?

Start with two or three packages, no more. Too many options stall the decision. A common design:

Package For whom Suggested expiry
4 sessions Clients trying a session every two weeks 3 months
8 sessions Clients who already come often 5 to 6 months
10 sessions Loyal clients who come weekly or every two weeks 6 months

These are suggestions. The working rule: the expiry should let a client use every session at the pace you recommend, with room for holidays and sick days.

How do you price a package?

Start from your single price and your costs, not from a competitor’s discount. A hypothetical example:

  • 60 minute relaxation massage, single session: $120.
  • 4 pack at 10% off: 4 × $120 = $480, minus 10% = $432 ($108 a session).
  • 8 pack at 15% off: 8 × $120 = $960, minus 15% = $816 ($102 a session).

Now check the margin. If the therapist earns 40% of the full price, or a flat fee per session, see what is left for the studio at $102 after rent, products, linens and card fees. If too little is left, lower the discount or agree therapist pay on the amount actually paid. More on that in massage therapist pay and commission and how to price massage services.

What rules does a package need?

Write the rules in a few lines and show them before payment:

  • Services included. Only the 60 minute massage? Can it be used for 90 minutes by paying the difference? Do hot stones count?
  • Therapists. Any therapist, or only some?
  • Expiry. The exact date unused sessions expire.
  • Cancelling a session. Cancel in time and the session goes back to the pack. Miss it or cancel late and it is used. See the massage cancellation policy.
  • Transfers. Can someone else use the pack? If so, how.
  • Refunds. What happens if the client changes their mind about the pack.

What do the rules mean for refunds and disputes?

Prepaid services sit under consumer protection laws that differ by province and state, including rules on cancelling prepaid contracts and on expiry dates for prepaid products and gift cards. Check your local rules before you set an expiry or a no refund line, and have a lawyer review your terms.

Card disputes are the other risk. Stripe’s dispute prevention guide (checked October 2026) recommends describing your refund and cancellation policies clearly, showing the full policy before purchase rather than only a link, and asking customers to agree to it. A package with rules the client accepted at checkout is far easier to defend than one sold with a handshake.

How do you sell a massage package as a gift?

A massage package is a lovely gift for Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, birthdays and the holidays. You do not need a special product for it: the client buys a pack or a single session and gives it to the person they have in mind.

Agree how it works before you advertise it:

  1. Who holds the sessions. The simplest way is for the recipient to create their own account; you remove the sessions from the buyer and add them to the recipient, with the reason recorded.
  2. How they book. Send the booking link with a short message the buyer can print or forward.
  3. Expiry. Gifts often take longer to be used. Consider a slightly longer expiry for these packs.
  4. A printed card. A simple card at the front desk with your name and the link helps buyers who want to hand over something physical.

One idea that works well: a 2 session pack, one for the giver and one for the receiver, which can even be booked at the same time in two rooms.

How do you make packages sell themselves?

  • Offer it at the end of the first session. The moment the client feels best is the right time to mention it, with no pressure.
  • Show the saving in dollars, not only in percent: “save $48” on the 4 pack.
  • Use an intro offer. A first session at a special price, which each person can buy only once, with the package as the next step.
  • Remind clients when sessions run low. A note when one session is left, or when the pack is close to expiring, prompts renewal.
  • Go easy on promo codes. A code for partners or special dates helps; a code all the time teaches clients to wait for a discount.

Package or monthly membership?

A package suits clients who come irregularly. A monthly membership, renewed on the card every month, suits clients with a fixed routine. Many studios offer both. For spas that want a membership club, see spa membership program.

Package checklist

  • Two or three packages, no more
  • Discount worked out against the real margin
  • Expiry that matches the recommended rhythm
  • Services and therapists included, in writing
  • Clear cancellation and transfer rules
  • Rules shown and accepted before payment
  • A reminder when sessions run low

How elastudio handles packages

In elastudio you sell packs with an expiry, monthly memberships on the card and intro offers each person can buy once, paid straight into your own Stripe account. Unused sessions expire on their own on the last day, you adjust credits with a recorded reason, and clients get an e-mail when a pack is close to expiring. Dedicated gift cards are still coming soon. See how it works for massage studios and spas.

Start with one package

Launch a 4 session pack with a three month expiry and a small discount. Watch how many clients buy it and how many renew within three months. Then decide whether a bigger pack is worth it.

Questions people ask

How much discount should a massage package give?

Many studios stay between 5% and 15% off the single session price. More than that can squeeze your margin, so work it out against the therapist's cost per hour first.

How long should a massage package last?

Long enough to use every session comfortably at the pace you recommend. For 4 sessions every two weeks, three months is reasonable. Show the expiry before purchase.

Can massage packages expire?

Usually yes, but some provinces and states limit expiry dates on prepaid products and gift cards. Check your local consumer rules before you set one.

Can I sell a massage package as a gift?

Yes. The client buys a pack or a single session and gives it to someone. Agree in advance how the recipient books and whose account holds the sessions.
