Buyers without a CPF, and asking for the document at checkout

A foreign buyer without a CPF is marked No CPF (foreigner), and their note goes out without waiting. When every note needs the buyer's CPF, notes for Brazilians without one wait under Waiting for a document. You can also ask members for their CPF when they buy online.

How a note names the buyer

Each NFS-e names the buyer by the CPF (or CNPJ) saved on their member profile. If the profile has none, what happens depends on your settings and on who the buyer is. To set NFS-e up, see Issue NFS-e.

Foreign buyers

A buyer who has no CPF because they are a foreigner is marked with the box No CPF (foreigner). Their note then:

  • names them by the Tax number from their country, if you type one (it is optional);
  • or, without one, names them as a foreign buyer without a tax number.

A foreign buyer’s note never waits for a CPF, even when Every note needs the buyer’s CPF is on. elastudio does not ask for the buyer’s country: the national note uses the country only together with a full foreign address.

Notes waiting for a CPF

With Every note needs the buyer’s CPF on, a note for a Brazilian buyer without a CPF waits instead of going out. Its status is Needs information.

To send it:

  1. Open Settings, NFS-e, Waiting for a document. Every waiting note is listed.
  2. On the note, type the buyer’s CPF or CNPJ, or tick No CPF (foreigner) and, if you have it, type their country’s tax number.
  3. Select Send the note.

The same field is on the sale’s NFS-e section. Either way, the CPF or document is saved on the member’s profile, so their next notes go out on their own.

With Every note needs the buyer’s CPF off, a note without a CPF does not wait: it goes out without naming the buyer by a document.

Ask for the document at checkout

To collect the CPF before the note is needed, turn on Ask for the document at checkout in Settings, NFS-e, Fiscal settings. It is off by default.

When a member buys online, they then see For your invoice and either:

  • type their CPF or CNPJ;
  • or tick I have no CPF (I am a foreigner) and, if they want, type the tax number from their country.

It is saved on their profile for the next purchases, and a note of theirs that was waiting for it is sent.

The document is not asked when the member pays at the studio. For those sales, staff add it on the sale when needed.
